Getting started
Do I need an account?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for: no email, no password, no profile. The app uses the Apple Account you’re already signed in to on your iPhone, and keeps your Rolodex in your own private iCloud.
What do I need to use it?
An iPhone running iOS 26 or later, and the app, which is free on the App Store. Sign in to iCloud on it too, so your Rolodex is kept in your private iCloud and stays in sync.
How do I add someone?
In the Rolodex, tap the + button at the top, or Add your first person if your Rolodex is empty, and type their name. Pick a photo, tap their face if there’s more than one, and adjust the square crop. Choose any groups, then save. It takes under a minute.
- You can add up to five photos per person. Quizzes show one at random, so you learn their face from different angles.
- Add their nickname too, and put them in a group for where you know them from, like Padel or School run. When you reveal their name in a quiz, the card shows who they go by and their groups.
- No photo handy? Save just the name. They’re kept as a draft until you add a face.
The app didn’t find a face in my photo.
The app takes you to Crop it yourself. Drag the photo to fit the face in the square, pinch to zoom, then tap Use this crop. If it found other faces but not theirs, tap No face found? Crop it yourself. Faces that are turned away, very small or partly covered are the ones detection most often misses.
Can the app see all my photos?
No. You pick photos with Apple’s photo picker, so the app only gets the ones you choose and never asks for your whole library. It keeps just the square crop of the face, not the original photo.
Practicing
How does a quiz work?
Look at the face and try to say the name out loud, then grade yourself with Right or Wrong. If you’re stuck:
- Swipe up for a hint: their initials.
- Swipe down to reveal the name. It counts as missed, and Next card moves you on.
- Swipe left or right to skip.
Anyone you get right is done for this quiz. Anyone you get wrong, reveal or skip comes back later, and the quiz ends when you’ve got everyone right. Prefer tapping? Hint, Reveal and Skip buttons sit under every card.
To see the guide again, go to the Settings tab › Quiz › Replay the card tutorial.
Why can’t I start a quiz?
A quiz needs at least two people with a photo. People saved without one are drafts, and they sit out until you add a face. A group quiz needs two people with a photo in that group. Most missed unlocks after your first quiz, once there are at least two names that didn’t come back to you.
Can I practice just some of my people?
Yes. On the Quiz tab, pick a group to quiz just those people before you walk in, or scroll down to Keep it fresh and tap Most missed to focus on the names you keep forgetting.
How do groups work?
Groups are labels you make up, like Work, Church or Neighbors, and someone can be in as many as you like. Rename or delete them in the Settings tab › Rolodex › Groups. Deleting a group never deletes the people in it.
iCloud and your iPhone
How do I move my Rolodex to a new iPhone?
Sign in to iCloud on the new iPhone with the same Apple Account, then install What’s Their Name. Your Rolodex comes down from your private iCloud by itself. Photos can take a little while on a slow connection, and the iCloud card at the top of the Settings tab shows when it last synced.
What does the iCloud status in Settings mean?
The card at the top of the Settings tab shows how syncing is going. None of these stop you from using the app.
- Synced or Syncing: all good.
- Waiting for network: you’re offline. Changes are saved on your iPhone and sync when you’re back online.
- iCloud unavailable: in the iPhone’s Settings app, check you’re signed in to iCloud, then tap your name › iCloud and make sure What’s Their Name is allowed to use it. Until then, your Rolodex is only on this iPhone.
- iCloud storage full: in the iPhone’s Settings app, tap your name › iCloud to free up space or choose a bigger plan. New changes wait on your iPhone until there’s room, and nothing is lost.
- Sync error: the app keeps retrying, or you can tap Try again. If it stays for a day, restart the app. If that doesn’t fix it, tap Contact support on the card or email us.
Can you restore my Rolodex if I lose my iPhone?
We never have a copy of your Rolodex, so we can’t restore it for you. It’s kept in your private iCloud, though, so signing in with the same Apple Account on a new iPhone brings it back.
Privacy
Can you see my Rolodex?
No. There’s no account and no server of ours. Your Rolodex lives on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud, which only your Apple Account can access. We don’t collect, sell or share anything, there are no ads or third-party analytics, and your photos never train anything. The Privacy Policy has the details.
Does the app recognize who people are?
No. It uses Apple’s Vision framework, on your iPhone, to find where the faces are in a photo so you can pick the right one. It never works out who anyone is, never matches faces between people, and doesn’t build a faceprint. It’s a memory aid for people you already know, not a way to identify strangers.
Will people know I added them?
No. Nothing is sent to the people in your Rolodex. It’s never public, and there’s no directory anyone can search.
Someone added me to their Rolodex. Can you remove me?
We can’t, because we have no access to anyone’s Rolodex. Please ask the person who added you to delete you. Their Rolodex stays private to them and isn’t shared with anyone.
Deleting your data
How do I delete someone?
Open their profile and tap Delete person. They move to Recently deleted with their photos, groups and quiz history, and stay there for 30 days in case you change your mind. To restore them, or delete them for good sooner, go to the Settings tab › Data › Recently deleted.
How do I delete everything?
Go to the Settings tab › Data › Delete all Rolodex data, type DELETE, then tap Delete everything. It removes every person, photo, group, quiz and stat from your iPhone and from iCloud, including anyone in Recently deleted. Your other devices remove it the next time they sync. This can’t be undone.
Older iPhone or iCloud backups may still hold a copy until those backups are replaced.
If I delete the app, is my data gone?
Deleting the app removes your Rolodex from that iPhone, but the copy in your iCloud stays, so it comes back if you reinstall. To remove it from iCloud too, use Delete all Rolodex data before you delete the app, or go to the iPhone’s Settings app › your name › iCloud.
Still stuck?
Email support@whatstheirname.app. It helps to include:
- your app version, from the Settings tab › About › Version
- your iPhone model and iOS version
- what you tried, and what happened instead
Screenshots help too. Crop out any faces you’d rather not share.
